Yesturday we went for a little adventure out into the country side into a village with a family from the church. It was nice to see a part of Ukraine that isn't the city. It was quite nice, the houses are very very small though. We had a nice meal together and I even got to pull water up from a well.
Today was our last shelter visit. It was sad today in particular because one of the little girls that was there every week that we have been there got taken away to an orphanage while we were there. She was crying and her friends were crying. She had gotten to know the children there for just a few weeks and now she has to move again. We really felt sad for the children.
Our time is just about up here. We only have one more list to come (on the weekend). Here is the list Peter created for today...
1. Ukrainian dial-up internet travels at such a speed that one actually experiences "numb bum" simply checking e-mail.
2. Also, this same internet connection allows for the screen saver to be activated twice while waiting for a web page to load up.
3. Yes it is true that three grown men can fit on a Vespa style scooter!
4. When describing bacon Ukrainians use the term "cooked" very loosely.
5. The beverage that is made by taking dried fruit and boiling it (why did we dry it if we were going to put it in water?) tastes and smells like campfire smoke. Pass the Kwas!
6. If the man in the currency changing office were to sweat any more he may need to ask the company to provide him with a lifejacket! (Do not forget that he sits under a staircase and we pass the money through a half sqaure foot window.)
7. It is possible for one person in a vehicle to be involved in a crash while the others remain unaffected. Perhaps this has something to do with being 6'3 in a car built for 5'2! Don't worry we are all okay just a little bump which caused me to nearly create my own personal sunroof using my head as a puncturing tool!
8. Vanilla Coke can still be purchased in these parts of the world!
9. Generally speaking you are better off not looking at expiry dates here. Today's bottle of Pepsi featured the following expiry date: 21.06.08. (This may explain why we can still get the Vanilla Coke)
10. On the upside the Pepsi does come in a lovely glass bottle which requires either a bottle opener or teeth made of steel!
Just to add...I wasn't offered any of the dried fruit drink or the 'bacon'...I was very thankful that Peter tried it on our behalf! He was the brave one of the family! The bacon really looked like raw pork to me.....interesting!
